A native of Richmond, Virginia, Mycah Richardson discovered the avenue of graphic design through the love of a video game, Dance Dance Revolution, when he began to create his own content for the computer simulation, StepMania. Interested in learning…

Mycah Richardson, Graphic Designer & Photographer, energized by opportunities to work collaboratively, thrives in exploring ways to fuse his love for art, design, and music with his passion for creation.

As a means to fuel his affinity for the video game that marked the start of it all, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), he often scoured the Internet in his youth for a way to absorb all he could about it. His findings led him to an open-source computer simulation, StepMania. The existence of user-made content fascinated him immensely and set his imagination ablaze. It inspired him to create his own StepMania-related files, jump-starting his journey into expression through the fusion of Music and Visual Art. His interest piqued and eager to learn more about the realm in which he stumbled upon, he sought tutelage at The Visual Arts Center of Richmond in the 7th grade, where he fell in love with the art of Design, and pursued this love through the rest of his matriculation through RPS.

Continued exploration led Mycah to Virginia State University (VSU), where he would begin sharpening his tools for the professional world. Diving head-first into VSUarts, he concentrated in Graphic Design, receiving accolades in student and regional submissions, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Charette (2014). He participated in large-scale collaborative projects with non-profit organizations, such as Create•a•thon at VSU (2015). His work was chosen to reside in permanent Zine collections (Chattanooga Public Library) and he has even given presentations about his work at events such as AIGA’s PechaKucha (2015).

After receiving his B.F.A. from VSU, Mycah kicked off the beginning of his design career at Visual Appeal LLC, a collaborative design studio, where he contributed to the branding and marketing efforts of several entities in Richmond and the surrounding area, such the GATE Program and The Metropolitan Business League. Following that experience, he ventured into higher education as the Graphic Design Specialist of Virginia Union University, one of the oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country, located right in his hometown. There, he developed and maintained the university’s brand integrity, provided campus community-wide photography support, and fulfilled requests from all constituencies within the organization.

Fueled by his mother’s words, “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”, he sets to live his life helping people through his craft.
